Alverson believes his coaching isn’t mainly about winning costume crowns. It is about nothing less than his clients’ conception of themselves. “The girls have to decide — ‘What do I want the jury to know about me and my story?’ Isn’t that what we all do all the time? Isn’t life just a pageant?”

A town of 9,000 just north of the Florida border, Andalusia enjoyed a millisecond of fame 70 years ago, when Hank Williams, who lived for a year in a trailer here, wed Audrey Sheppard, another singer, at a local Texaco. (The union was later deemed legally invalid, because Sheppard’s divorce from another man was not yet final.)

Early this year, I visited Alverson in Andalusia. I found him at the neo-Classical-style county courthouse — Andalusia is Covington County’s seat — that presides over the quiet town square. He was shuttling between the district attorney’s office and the corridor outside, negotiating a plea deal for a court-appointed client who faced drug-related charges. She struggled to maintain a consistent story.

“We’ve got to stay on top of this,” Alverson said, urging her to focus. Her eyes wandered as she fidgeted on a hard wooden bench. “Listen. I’m talking to you like you’re the student and I’m the teacher, because we’ve got to make sure this works.”

Later, as we crossed the street to the law offices of Alverson & Alverson, he explained that painkillers and meth had ruptured Covington County’s social fabric. Once, he specialized in litigation for corporate clients. Today, 60 percent of his time is spent working on criminal-defense cases and serving as a court-appointed guardian for children and people with mental illnesses. “That’s what the needs are,” he said. “It’s just the reality.”

Alverson’s unlikely avocation began two decades ago, when he was practicing law and working part time in a clothing shop. His choir director at First Methodist Church called: A high-schooler in the chorus wanted to compete in the Covington County Junior Miss pageant, but her parents were absent. He asked Alverson to meet with her.

“Sweet girl,” Alverson told me. “Emily was her name.” He knew little about pageants. He remembered his family watching Miss America on TV one year and his grandmother saying of Miss Alabama, “She is ugly as mud!” But he has always had opinions about clothes: “Even when he was little,” says his mother, Patsy, “he would tell his daddy what to wear.” When Emily showed him the loud, striped skirt she’d picked for the interview portion, he told her to throw it out.

“I’d recently watched ‘Basic Instinct,’ and Sharon Stone looked so gorgeous in her white suit,” he said. “We put Emily’s hair up, sent her out in an off-white suit and she felt great. I was just making it all up, but she won the pageant.”

In Andalusia, as in any small town, “people talk, and Emily thanked me publicly,” Alverson said. Soon other girls — or more often, their moms — began calling Alverson, and he said yes because there are few things he likes more than being helpful. At first, he didn’t ask for payment. “Another girl got second runner-up,” he said. “They took me to dinner after.” But after a year or so, he started charging.

In 1998, he took a judging workshop held by the Miss Alabama organization. As he began judging and directing local pageants, he realized that his lawyerly strengths corresponded with contestants’ weaknesses. “In both settings, you’re an actor,” he said. “You’re playing the best version of yourself.” In court, he uses witnesses to construct his arguments. But in a pageant, he explained, “you are your other witnesses. Each interview question is an opportunity to present a different witness — one to show your personality, another for humanity, another to be your justification — but it all has to be consistent. That’s where a lot of girls fall, because there are disconnects in their answers.”

His first big success was Scarlotte Deupree Kilgore, who began competing in pageants when she was 13. Deupree Kilgore, who has described herself as a failed cheerleader, won Miss Alabama on her fifth try and was first runner-up at Miss America in 2003. “Pageants are funny and kitschy, but it goes way beyond butt glue and lipstick,” Deupree Kilgore told me. “A whole lot of people can tell you what dress to wear. Very few can also talk to you about culture and current events, make sure you’re well rounded and build up your confidence. That’s what Bill does.”

Alverson, 53, and his wife, Cindy, from whom he now lives separately, have a son, William, and two daughters, Blanche and Stella, neither of whom has competed in pageants. (He said his daughters’ names honor his grandmothers, both named Blanche, and a great-aunt, not the sisters from “A Streetcar Named Desire.”) William, who is 26 and the other partner at Alverson & Alverson, was in junior high when his dad got serious about coaching. “Not gonna lie — I thought it was weird,” William said when I visited his office. “But then I realized how successful he was. And when I got to college, a lot of really pretty girls seemed to know who he was. It turned out to be a good conversation starter.”

One day Alverson and I drove 150 miles to Columbus, Ga., to Lasting Impressions, a shop where custom pageant gowns can cost up to $10,000. Several times a year, Lasting Impressions brings in pageant luminaries — the gown designer Sherri Hill, the model and runway coach Lu Sierra, Alverson — for a weekend of intensive coaching.

Alverson’s sessions, for which he charges his usual hourly rate, were held in a vacant H&R Block office next door. Alverson dislikes coaching anyone under 14. But on these weekends, he meets anyone who signs up.

For the first 11 minutes of an hour session with a 15-year-old girl, her mother, a former pageant contestant, talked about herself. For the next two, she bragged about another daughter. When she finally paused, Alverson locked eyes with this daughter, a sweet-faced, heavyset adolescent who could pass for Adele’s 6-foot-1 Georgia-born sister. Alverson had met them before and noted that the girl had lost weight. “Seventy-five pounds!” her mom said. “She’s realized how much easier it is to have a healthier lifestyle.”

When Alverson asked the girl whether weight had always been a struggle, her mom said, “Her clavicle was broken at birth because she was such a big baby!”

He asked the girl about her talents, and again her mom responded: “She’s not the singer that my older daughter or my younger daughter is. I want her to be a cheerleader, but she likes marching band.”

Alverson’s voice often seems stuck at “bark.” His friends joke that he’s physically incapable of whispering — when I asked him to try, it sounded like a normal talking voice — but now he somehow found his “soothe” setting. He asked questions about school that had little to do with school. Then he pivoted, subtly, to address the dynamic in the room. “Sometimes, it feels like you’re not there, right?” he said to the girl. “I know it’s going to hurt your feelings.” She nodded. Her mom chortled: “She’s used to that.”

Alverson ignored Mom, encouraging the daughter to keep playing the saxophone. During high school, he said, everybody dismissed him as a skinny wimp: “Music was my safe place. You with me?”

“Yes, sir,” she drawled.

“Remember that,” he said, “and there’s going to be a whole lot of fabulous going on.”

For the first time that hour, the daughter beamed.

“Pageants create a culture,” says Kathy Peiss, a historian at the University of Pennsylvania and the author of “Hope in a Jar: The Making of America’s Beauty Culture,” “in which beauty, poise and all these kinds of ‘feminine’ traits are graded. They become part of women’s self-reflection. On the other hand, these have been real opportunities for women to get scholarship money, go to college, become professional.” The American tradition of beauty pageants began in the mid-19th century, when P. T. Barnum sought “the handsomest ladies” in the land, offering either a dowry (for single women) or a tiara (married) to the winner. Unease has accompanied the show from the start — nobody entered Barnum’s contest, which was seen as disreputable and even immoral. Even today, Peiss says, “it’s really easy to demean the women who participate, but what we have to think about as a culture is, what’s the line of discomfort with all this? And why?”

In 30 seconds at the Miss Teen USA contest in 2007, Caitlin Upton of South Carolina crossed that line, confirming every enduring stereotype of the vacuous pageant contestant. When asked why Americans are geographically illiterate, she replied: “People out there in our nation don’t have maps. . . . Our education like such as South Africa and, uh, the Iraq everywhere like, such as and, I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries.”

Moments like this show how dangerous it is for contestants to ignore the interview in their preparations. “The interview is a weakness for a lot of girls — a majority, actually. That’s why you often see the girls with the YouTube moments,” Nana Meriwether told me. “So much of the coaching is to do with the physical, and there are not a lot of coaches who teach you the mental side.”

Alverson doesn’t shy from the physical, though his advice on the subject strays toward the arcane. In Columbus, he instructed a Miss Mississippi contender, Jordin Johnson, whose years of jazz dancing have given her formidable quads and calves, to buy Clinique men’s bronzer. (“No sparkle.”) Then he traced a line down her outer leg, showing where to apply it. “The darkness will narrow and lengthen,” he said. “Accentuate.”

But such suggestions are free gifts with purchase — most of a coaching hour with Alverson resembles talk therapy. “The goal is for the girls to learn more and more about themselves,” he said. “How was your perspective on your personal history formed? What do you value? How do you tell that story?”

Within five minutes of meeting Briana Sturgis, another aspiring Miss Mississippi, he told her to lose the ebonics. Sturgis, who resembles Audra McDonald, habitually hid her sunbeam smile behind one hand. She shyly told Alverson that she hoped to be the first African-American woman to graduate from Delta State University’s commercial-aviation program. Her hero: Bessie Coleman, who in 1921 became the first black woman to earn a pilot’s license.

“That is your story to tell, and it’s awesome,” Alverson said. But, worried that a jury might not know Coleman, he suggested that she mention Amelia Earhart, too. “This is not Miss Black Mississippi. And if the judges aren’t allied with you, you’re stuck.” Then he regarded her for a long, silent moment. “Your hair looks like [expletive]!” Sturgis’s mother, Jennie, nodded. “But that smile — don’t cover your mouth! You’re blessed. You light up a room with that smile, darling!”

Alverson is essentially an editor, identifying and contextualizing compelling elements of each woman’s story. When Megan Smith, Miss Center Point 2014, walked into the room, they hugged — they’ve worked together since 2010 — and dove into her research into educational inequity. Smith has won more than $50,000 in pageant scholarships, paying her way through the University of Alabama. An education minor who plans to go to law school, she works with underprivileged youths in the Black Belt, a rural ribbon of south-central Alabama, where white kids typically go to fine private schools and African-Americans attend underresourced public ones.

“You’re going to have out-of-state judges,” Alverson said of the Miss Alabama pageant, reminding Smith to explain the Black Belt’s name (it refers to the soil). “Make sure they know it’s not a race thing.”

Smith, who describes herself as a Hillary Clinton supporter and “Sheryl Sandberg feminist,” was the rare client Alverson did not berate over a lack of familiarity with current events. He often suggests Khaled Hosseini’s novel “A Thousand Splendid Suns” to improve their understanding of women’s rights globally. He also insists that they read The Week and USA Today online. “This is your Achilles’ heel!” he yelled at one startled woman who had ignored his advice. “I’ve told you before: USA Today! Every morning! When you go to the bathroom, scroll through it!”

Each season, Alverson explained to me, judges ask about one controversial topic more than any other. Illegal immigration, abortion, gays in the military — all have had a turn. This year, he believes, it’s marriage equality. He raised the issue in every session in Columbus with a contestant over 16, unspooling mini-sermons that rambled semicoherently through race relations, Levitical prohibitions on shellfish and the large number of gay men in the arts. After one woman confessed, “I’m not that comfortable with gay marriage,” his lecture in response lasted 21 minutes. Alverson, who is an outspoken social liberal, admitted afterward: “I hit the ones who are conservative harder on the cross-examination. They can be against it, but they have to know why. There is often a gay person on the judging panel, and they’re not always out.”

Understanding juries is central to Alverson’s interview prep. He researches judges and then prints their pictures for contestants to put up in their bedrooms, so that they’re comfortable with those faces. “We scour Facebook. Are there a lot of selfies? Do they seem egocentric?” he said. He instructs his charges to deploy the data carefully. “You have to be authentic and not too obvious. You don’t want to say, ‘Like you, I am this.’ But you can empower [a judge] and say subtle things that suggest commonalities.”

Before the Miss Florida pageant this year, he learned that one judge was a male model from Hawaii. When this judge asked Alverson’s client, Amanda Hatcher, why he should move to Florida, “I knew not to say beaches — he’s from Hawaii,” she told me. According to her research, another judge, who asked a question about youth behavior, is a devoutly Christian vocalist. “I’ve played piano from the age of 7, so I talked about the importance of music as an outlet. I’m also Catholic. I didn’t say that, but I made clear that faith is important, too.”

Hatcher, 20, first worked with Alverson this year, the night before the Miss Nassau County contest. “I had entered pageant after pageant,” she says. “I never even placed. This time, I won.” At Miss Florida, she again exceeded expectations, making the top 16. “I’ll be back next year,” she says. “Bill has given me the confidence that I can win Miss Florida and then Miss America.”

All the same, Alverson tries to manage expectations. “I want my girls to be ready for that too,” he said. “Life is a beauty pageant, though it’s not just about beauty.” (The word “beauty” now appears nowhere on the Miss America home page.) “If she just goes into it to feel special, that will be all she gets, if that. If she learns new skills, it will make her a better employee, a better daughter, a better wife, a better mother, a better person.”

In 1968, several hundred feminists descended on the Atlantic City boardwalk to protest the Miss America pageant. In a manifesto, they denounced pageant girls as “inoffensive, bland, apolitical.” Most of the women I met as I shadowed Alverson defy those stereotypes: Madison Gesiotto, Miss Ohio USA 2014, interned with the Romney-Ryan campaign in 2012. Shelby Cochran of Alabama, Miss Marshall County 2014, helped build and launch a rocket at the Bonneville Salt Flats as part of a NASA competition. Lacey Sanchez, Miss Lafayette 2014 and a former Southland Conference collegiate pole-vaulting champion, now does master’s research at Louisiana State on mass media’s role in adolescent health.

Sanchez, Alverson’s 14th and final client on his first day in Columbus, placed second at the Miss Louisiana contest in 2013. This would be her last try for the crown — at 24, she was close to hitting the Miss America system’s age cap. It was well past 9 p.m., and hunger worsened her irritation at the Miss Louisiana questionnaire. “I need your help with these silly questions that I hate and am insulted by,” she said. As Alverson laughed, Sanchez read her least favorite questions aloud. There were many. " ‘Are you a violin or a fiddle?’ ” she said, rolling her eyes. “I don’t know — I think I was born a fiddle and turned into a violin.”

Alverson gently pushed her to be playful, using her natural wit to turn negative feelings into positive answers. She ignored him. She especially hated this one: “Describe your favorite color to a blind man.”

“O.K., pink,” she said. “How would I know what pink is? Pink is cotton candy? Sweet and sticky? You know what this is? It’s cheesy.” Alverson shot back: “This may be cheesy, but that attitude is only going to get you another runner-up plaque.”

When they met again the next morning at 9, Sanchez seemed chastened. “I really bombed,” she said, reflecting on practice the night before. Alverson agreed: “I tried to give you the ball, and you turned it down.” (Though his daughter Blanche played pro basketball in Spain, Alverson isn’t good at sports or sports analogies.) Sanchez nodded.

The overnight turnaround encouraged Alverson. “The ones who think they know all the answers are the ones who lose,” he told me. “She’ll win Miss Louisiana. Because she’ll do the work.”

Last month, she did win. Afterward, I called Alverson to ask about her chances at Miss America. “Lacey isn’t a typical pageant girl,” he said. “Can the judges really get to know her? The first time I ever did this, the girl wasn’t supposed to do anything in the program, and she won. So we have a shot.”

This wasn’t the first time Alverson switched to “we.” For all his talk of self-expression, he clearly gets invested in seeing his clients succeed, in pageants as much as in court. “I absolutely like to win,” he said. “Even when I’m playing Tiddlywinks, I’m playing to win. Yeah, this strokes my ego. It’s seeing them learn and grow. I don’t want them to sound smart. I want them to be smart, well rounded and well informed. Sometimes, years later, the mother’s calling and saying, ‘My daughter could never have done this without you.’ It’s a woman saying: ‘You helped me as a teen, and now I’m having a med-school interview. Could we talk for 10 minutes?’ One girl said to me, ‘I will never have it exactly right.’ I said: ‘Not until the day you die, honey. None of us will. But we’re always improving.’ ”
