How To Reference A Website Harvard In Essay

The format for creating a Harvard reference for a website or YouTube video is:

AUTHOR(S), Year of publication or last update. Title of page [viewed date]. Available from: URL

In text references:
In the video from Southampton Solent (2014), it is evident that...

Sudworth (2012) has described how...

Note:

No page number is given because this comes from an online source that doesn't include them.

Reference list examples:

SOUTHAMPTON SOLENT, 2014.  Southampton Solent University new build animation [viewed 28 July 2015].  Available from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQJDLiP-GyY

SUDWORTH, J., 2012. China's students take on tough Gaokao university entrance exam [viewed 8th June 2012]. Available from: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-china-18349873

Websites with missing details

Some websites don't provide all the details you may need - include as much information as you can. If no author is given, use the provider of the website as the author (this may be the name of a University, a company, a newspaper, or just the website name).

In text reference:

This approach has been outlined by Deakin University (2010)...

Reference list example:

DEAKIN UNIVERSITY, 2010. The literature review [viewed 6 May 2008]. Available from: http://www.deakin.edu.au/library/findout/research/litrev.php

Often the date that the website was published is not available. You may find at the bottom of the page a note of when it was last updated – give this as the date.  If no date is provided then you should put n.d.
